Mole Vanvitelliana - Vanvitelli Hall
27 February - 22 May 2022

With more than 100 shots of some masters of photography of the early twentieth century, the exhibition "FRIDA KAHLO. A life in pictures" intends to reconstruct the events that have characterized the life of the great Mexican artist and investigate the reasons why she became a female icon at the international level.
The exhibition shows first of all the context in which this particular personality asserted herself: Mexico in the early twentieth century, crossed by a revolution that changed its history, thanks to humble campesinos and heroic protagonists such as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.
The epic and the myth of the Mexican revolution will remain imprinted in Frida's mind and will shape her indomitable character, feeding her sense of rebellion against bourgeois conventions and the impositions of a strongly masculine society.
The events of the Kahlo family are set in this context.
Guillermo, the father, is a professional photographer of German origin, arrived in Mexico in 1891 and soon fell in love with the country that welcomed him.
His activity is testified by some photographs taken on behalf of the Austrian government, to document the churches of Mexico, erected in the colonial period.
The tormented biographical events of Frida are told by 80 photographs, most of them original, taken by Guillermo Kahlo himself during his daughter's childhood and youth and then by some of the greatest photographers of her time: Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, Lucienne Bloch, Bernard Silbertein, Leo Matiz, Maunel, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray and others.
Alongside Frida is often portrayed Diego Rivera, the great painter and muralist with whom she shared an intense and turbulent relationship, which spanned much of her life and which lives on in their Casa Azul - now transformed into a museum and documented by some images that conclude the exhibition along with the large painting that reproduces Las Dos Frida, made by Chinese painter Xu De Qi.
But other characters such as Leon Trotsky and André Breton also appear.
A video-story, returns finally the few filmed images of Frida that have come down to us.
