CANTINONE'S CAVES
Description
The Grotta del Cantinone is an artificial hypogeum, a ring of approximately 300 meters that winds beneath the Covered Market and the Sanctuary of San Giuseppe da Copertino in Osimo.
The bas-reliefs and figures that can be admired inside are predominantly of a religious nature and express a ritual use of the place. It is likely that the friars descended here to gather in prayer or to remain alone in absolute silence in contemplation.
Along the path, one is struck by seeing on the fragile sandstone walls the signs of human labor due to the use of picks.
Despite their origin possibly being much older, dating back to the Romans and Piceni, as suggested by the ancient wells with footholds inside the path, the environment was expanded in the medieval period, reaching its current size: a height and width of about 2 meters.
At crossroads, one may become a bit disoriented, but it is worth noting that the guide will show you a small trick to avoid getting lost!
The easily recognizable symbolism and the single-level layout of the path make the visit to this hypogeum suitable for everyone.
