Sanctuary Of The Crucifix - Numana
On the sides of the entrance you can see two canvases by Domenico Simonetti: “Moses Receives the Tablets of the Law” and “Moses Parts the Water”, followed by two frescoes attributed to Andrea Lilli, including a canvas with the Assumption.
The sanctuary also houses an ancient and well-known wooden Crucifix that is considered miraculous. It is said that it was brought by Charlemagne as a gift to Pope Leo III. But due to a storm, the Emperor was forced to stay in the town of Numana, where he abandoned the simulacrum. It was found in the sea only after a tsunami caused part of a cliff the ancient hamlet to fall into the sea. The main entrance is located in front of Palazzo dei Vescovi, Numana’s town hall.
