Fortress of Offagna

THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS IS THE HEART OF THE VILLAGE OF OFFAGNA

Visiting the Rocca di Offagna means taking a dip into the past, in a time between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when the city of Ancona was fighting with its rival Osimo. In fact, in the mid-1400s, Ancona obtained from Pope Nicholas V possession of the small settlement of “castrum Ofanie”, located on a spur of sandstone rock about 300 meters above sea level. In just two years, the powerful maritime city built a military structure with walls and a high fortress to defend its lands from a possible attack by the troops of Osimo.

Born as part of the Castles of Ancona, today the Rocca di Offagna has been restored and is mostly open to visitors: you can go down into the dungeons of the tower, or go up to the room of the drawbridges and the ancient commander's room. This building does not only thrill history lovers, but also those who want to enjoy a suggestive view of the Marche hills. The patrol walkway and the Mastio terrace allow a 360-degree view of the countryside and the historic centers surrounding Offagna, from the Apennines to Conero.
The space inside the Rocca also houses a collection of ancient weapons born from a collaboration between the Academy of Oplology and Militaria of Ancona and the State Museums of the Republic of San Marino.
